The GIGA German Institute of Global and Area Studies is an independent social science research institute based in Hamburg, Germany. With its research, teaching, and outreach activities, the GIGA seeks to contribute to making the world a more peaceful, equitable, and inclusive place.
The GIGA is committed to a Global Approach to Scholarship, which works with perspectives, concepts, and experiences from different world regions. The institute is dedicated to providing research-based policy advice. With this mandate, the GIGA aims to push the boundaries of research and to achieve both academic and societal impact.
The GIGA is one of 12 institutional partners in the MAGYC Project. It leads the work package “Comparing Crises,” looking at the dynamics of South–South migration flows in key sending regions of migration to the European Union from a comparative, multi-level perspective. Three GIGA scholars will contribute to the MAGYC project: Dr. André Bank, acting director of the GIGA Institute of Middle East Studies, Dr. Christiane Fröhlich, research fellow at the GIGA Institute of Middle East Studies, and Dr. Nicole Hirt, research fellow at the GIGA Institute of African Affairs.
